Berdeen Carolyn Manteufel

Berdeen Carolyn Manteufel was born on October 18, 1936, in Vassar, KS, to Robert and Ella (nee Wigger) Bauck. She departed this life on April 5, 2024. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Vassar, KS.  She began playing the organ after confirmation and played for 56 years.

She continued taking organ lessons as a student at Emporia State University. She continued her study at Washburn University in Topeka, KS, and Concordia University in Seward, NE. She taught piano lessons and assisted those transitioning from piano to organ. She was a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians.

After graduating from Lyndon High School, she received her B.S. in Education in 1960 and an M.S. in Educational Administration in 1966, from Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University). She taught fourth grade in Melvern and Lyndon Kansas for fifteen years. She was a member of the Kansas National Educational Association and the Delta Kappa Education Society.

She married Pastor Thomas Manteufel on June 20, 1971 at Zion Lutheran Church, in Vassar, Kansas. They have one son, Matthew.

Berdeen is survived by her beloved husband Thomas and, in Overland Park, KS, her son, Matthew and daughter-in-law Brenda, grandson Grant and granddaughter Ella, as well as sister-in-law Carol. Her brother Melvin preceded her in death in 2021.

Services : The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 9 in the Great Hall of Ambruster Chapel from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. The Funeral Service will be Wednesday 10:00 am at Village Lutheran Church 9237 Clayton Rd, with reception to follow. Interment will be at Lenexa Cemetery in Lenexa, Kansas on Saturday April 13, 2024, at 1pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Concordia Seminary Library, in care of Concordia Seminary, 801 De Mun, St. Louis, MO 63105.
